The case
The Pearl Islands sit in the Gulf of Panama, close enough to reach for a day and far enough to feel like leaving. For a client with one spare day in the city who would rather stay off a domestic flight, this is the answer.
The archipelago is large and uneven. Contadora has the infrastructure. Most of the rest are bare, which for the right client is exactly the appeal.
Best suited to a day out of the city, a short beach extension before an international departure, or a private charter for a family or a small group.
It is also the easiest place in Panama to get the logistics wrong, which is why this page is mostly about them.
Getting there
We quote the charter rather than the ferry for anything that matters. The ferry is cheaper, and it is also a fixed schedule on open water, which puts an international flight behind a single connection. The charter buys that back.

When to go
The dry months, December through April, bring the calmest crossings and the clearest water. The green months bring swell that can close a charter window at short notice.
We build the margin in and quote it. A client returning to the city for an evening flight is routed back with hours to spare, rather than minutes.
Panama's tourism authority names Las Perlas among the country's whale-watching locations, and the Ministry of Environment sets the season from July to October. Panama is one of the few places on earth where humpbacks from both hemispheres migrate.
That places the best wildlife window squarely inside the green season, which is the opposite of what most clients expect and worth saying out loud.
Las Perlas track the capital's weather more closely than the rest of the country: December through April is the dependable stretch, and October is the least predictable month of the year. For a departure the sea state matters more than the rain, and we check both.
What makes it worth the trip
Whales from both hemispheres, in the same water.
Panama is one of the very few places on earth where that happens. The season runs July through October — inside what most clients assume is low season.
The water is the product. Beaches on the smaller islands are empty on a weekday, and a charter can move between three or four of them in a day without ever queuing for a mooring.
Contadora carries the archipelago's history — it was the resort island of the seventies and eighties and still has the airstrip, which is why it remains the access point.
In season, the whales are close enough to the crossing that they are part of the day rather than a separate excursion.
Diving on the scale of Coiba, and a restaurant scene worth planning around, both sit further west, in Chiriquí and Veraguas. That is where we place the client who wants them.

In practice
Everything here is part of a private journey across Panama, from three nights.
Day trip
Out from Amador in the morning, three or four beaches, lunch on board or on a beach, back before the light goes.
Two nights
Short flight to Contadora, two days on the water, and the return timed against the international departure rather than against the ferry timetable.
Whale season
The same day, built around the crossing rather than the beaches, with a naturalist on board.
Groups are limited by vessel, not by beach. Above twelve the day is quoted as two boats rather than one larger one, which holds the experience together.
Our preparation
Sea state is checked the evening before and again at dawn. A charter the sea argues with is called off by us the evening before, rather than discovered by the client at the dock.
Return timing is built backwards from the client's next fixed commitment. If there is an international flight that evening, the day ends earlier and we say so at the quote, rather than on the day.
Charter operators here are uneven, and some sell more capacity than they hold. We use vessels we have been aboard, with crew we know.
