The case
Santa Catalina is a fishing and surf village where the road ends on the Veraguas coast. It holds the best-known wave in the country and the shortest crossing to Coiba National Park.
The days are spent on the water. Lodging is simple or boutique, and the evenings are quiet.
Best suited to families and couples who surf or want to learn, to snorkelers and divers who put Coiba first, and to clients who have already done the Caribbean.
Clients looking for a private-island resort are placed in the Gulf of Chiriquí, where that product exists.

Arrival is by road. We plan the drive with stops rather than as a single run, and the vehicle stays with the program where the itinerary calls for it.
Coiba runs as a day visit, 08:00 to 15:00, while the park headquarters at Gambute is rebuilt. Entry is booked with the Ministry of Environment at least 72 hours ahead.
When to go
The biggest swell arrives from May to October, when south and southwest swells reach the coast. That is the season for experienced surfers.
Estero, the beach break on a sand bottom, works year-round. It is where beginners and children learn.
For Coiba, December to April brings the calmest sea and the best visibility, according to the local boat operators.
Humpbacks pass through the park's waters from July to October, the season set by Panama's Ministry of Environment.
What makes it worth the fare
One hour by boat to Coiba.
Santa Catalina is the closest mainland port to Coiba National Park, inscribed by UNESCO in 2005.
La Punta, a point break over rock and reef, is the wave that put the village on the map. It is for intermediate and advanced surfers, out with a local coach who reads the tide.
Estero is the learning beach: sand bottom, long waves, and small groups with certified coaches.
Coiba is the other reason to come. The park was inscribed by UNESCO in 2005 and protects Coiba Island and 38 smaller islands. From Santa Catalina it is a one-hour crossing.
Snorkeling and diving days are matched to each client's level and certification.

In practice
Three nights — surf. Arrival by road, two full days between lessons at Estero and time on the water, then the drive out.
Four nights — surf and Coiba. As above, with one full day in the park: the crossing, the ranger station at Gambute, snorkeling and the island beaches.
Combined — Boquete and the coast. Highlands first, then about five hours by road to Santa Catalina. Mountain and sea in one trip, the natural pairing for families.
Group configurations are quoted separately: boat capacity and coach ratios set the limit, not room count.
