The case
The Canal is the reason most clients can place Panama on a map, and it is the single request that appears in almost every brief. That makes it the easiest part of an itinerary to get wrong: it is also the most visited site in the country, and at the wrong hour it is a full terrace above a still chamber.
What separates a good Canal morning from a mediocre one is not access. It is timing.
There are two places to watch a vessel transit, and they are on opposite coasts. Miraflores, on the Pacific side, is the one most itineraries use. Agua Clara, on the Caribbean side, overlooks the locks built in the 2016 expansion and the entrance to Gatún Lake.
It suits every client, which is exactly why it has to be handled properly.
Getting there
The Canal Authority puts a typical Miraflores visit at around an hour and a half. We quote three to four hours on the ground because the part that matters — a vessel actually entering the chamber — runs to the Canal's schedule rather than the visitor's.

When to go
This is the honest part, and it belongs at the start. The Canal Authority states plainly that transits vary with the schedule. The published schedule gives the day's expected movements, and the hour a vessel reaches the chamber moves with them.
What can be done is to work from the live schedule rather than from a brochure. Traffic concentrates in predictable windows, and those windows move.
We confirm the expected movements the day before and again on the morning itself, and we build the rest of the day around what the water is doing.
The result is that clients see a transit far more often than the average visitor does, and when the schedule runs against us we say so before the day starts rather than after.
What makes it worth the trip
Nobody can promise you a ship.
The Canal Authority states that transits vary with the schedule. We confirm expected movements the day before and again that morning, and build the day around the water.
The Canal opened in 1914 and still carries a material share of world trade. Standing at Miraflores, the scale is physical: a vessel fills the chamber with less than a meter to spare on either side, and the whole operation is run by people you can see.
The 2016 expansion added a second, larger set of locks. At Agua Clara the difference in scale between the two generations is visible from a single viewpoint, which is the version engineers and repeat visitors tend to prefer.
The IMAX at Miraflores runs a 45-minute film in a 500-seat theater, narrated by Morgan Freeman. It is genuinely good, and it is also 45 minutes that a well-timed itinerary can spend watching the locks instead.
For clients with an interest in the engineering rather than the spectacle, the day extends naturally to Gatún Lake and the former Canal Zone.

Boarding at Isla Flamenco, Amador, through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks, disembarking at Gamboa and back to the city by road, with lunch and a guide aboard for the whole sailing. The vessel rises with the water to the top of the lock walls. It is a scheduled, shared service on set dates, so we hold seats as soon as the travel dates are confirmed.
Caribbean side
A longer day by road, and the right answer when the client has already seen Miraflores or is traveling on to Portobelo and the Caribbean coast.
Groups above twelve are quoted separately: entry is by timed ticket with limited capacity and the bleachers hold 450, so group placement is booked rather than assumed.

We confirm expected transits with the Canal Authority the day before and again that morning. That single call is the difference between a client who sees a Panamax enter the chamber and one who sees an empty lock.
Entry is by timed ticket and the ticket desk shuts an hour before the site does. We hold entries rather than buying them on arrival, which is where most independent visitors lose their morning.
We have been to Miraflores at different hours and in different conditions, to learn where the light, the crowd and the temperature line up. Which platforms hold shade, and what time the first vessels come through.
The IMAX is optional and we treat it as such: it is an excellent 45 minutes and a poor use of them if a vessel is due.
